In language education, communication skills and performance ability are now regarded as more significant than grammatical knowledge and vocabulary. The idea of “the ability to perform tasks based on the Can-Do standards,” which CEFR is promoting, has become well known at home and abroad. Each language institution is applying this idea toward its teaching and thus is striving to create its own standards; Hokkaido University has organized the curriculum based on “Hokkaido University Japanese Standards”.

International Education Center, Institute for Academic Innovation offers Japanese education as a ‘communication’ which develops peer study between international students and Japanese students. We offer seven levels include beginner 1-3, intermediate 1-3, and advanced level. For more information on the course, please refer to the “General Japanese Course guide” .

The maximum capacity for each class is 35 students. If the number of applicants exceeds the capacity, we may ask you to switch classes in the first lesson.

New applicants who have never taken the General Japanese Course must take a placement test (except those mentioned in the Notes (2) below). If you took classes in the previous semester/quarter, you may take a placement test this time, but you do not have to.
The General Japanese course in Hokkaido University use online placement test TTBJ. Please take the test (SPOT90＋Grammar90＋漢字SPOT50) during the designated placement test period. Please refer to the PDF above to see how to take the test and check the flow after the test. Please check them carefully before taking the test. You can take the test from anywhere in the world.

Notes：
(1) The purpose of this test is to check the applicants’ Japanese level. If you cheat on the test and register classes higher than your actual level, you may not be able to keep up with the class. If cheating on the placement test is discovered, all courses for which you have applied will be canceled.
(2) If you have not previously studied Japanese, please DO NOT take the placement test as you will be automatically placed in Introductory 1.
(3) Even if you are not required to take the placement test, such as a first-time Japanese learner or continuing student, you will still need to submit a Japanese Course Registration Authorization Form.

How to Register for the General Japanese Course

The registration process for the General Japanese Course has changed！ Please check the new registration procedures carefully.

To register for the General Japanese Course, please complete Steps 1–5 below.

1. Complete the Authorization for Japanese Course Registration
Please complete the Authorization for Japanese Course Registration using this form and enter your name, Student ID number, and Placement Test score or　history of Japanese course enrollment.
※ You must complete the Authorization for Japanese Course Registration before registering through the Academic Affairs System.
※ Those who need to take the Placement Test should take it before the first class session.

2. Check the Syllabus
Please check the course content and schedule in the syllabus for each class.

3. Register through the Academic Affairs System
After completing Step 1, you can register for Japanese language courses and classes in Co-learning in Multicultural Classroom through the Academic Affairs System.
※ An ELMS-ID issued by your affiliated faculty or department is required to log in to the Academic Affairs System.
※ Registration becomes available from the following business day after completing Step 1, excluding Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays.
※ Faculty members, staff, and researchers cannot use the Academic Affairs System. After completing Step 1, please follow the instructions from the Japanese Course. For details, see [the General Japanese Course Information].

4. Register for Your Classes
Your Japanese language level in the Academic Affairs System will be determined based on the Placement Test score or Japanese course enrollment history entered in Step 1.
※ You can register for courses at your level and the two levels below. Example: If your level is Pre-Intermediate or Intermediate 1, you can register for the assigned level, Elementary 3, or Elementary 2.

5. Start attending from the First Class
You may register for courses after classes have begun.　However, Japanese language courses begin from the first class. Unless you have unavoidable circumstances, such as a delayed arrival in Japan, please make sure to attend from the first class.

（１）The classes you can choose from depend on your past class history and placement test scores. Please select classes based on your score and level and attend from the first class.
（２）Under no circumstances will late applications be accepted after the Japanese Course Registration Authorization period has ended.
（３）Class changes or withdrawals cannot be made after the class enrollment period has ended. If you are unable to continue attending the class, please submit the Class Withdrawal Form below during the period from Wednesday, October 21 to Thursday, October 22.

(1) The classroom information will be announced by email or on the website before the semester begins. You can check the classes you have registered for at any time in the Academic Affairs System.
(2) General Japanese Courses do not carry academic credit, except for students in designated program.
(3) In principle, students must attend 70% of classes or above. The passing grade is 60% or above.
